Online MS in Social Work Transfer Pathway Overview
The Online MS in Social Work Transfer pathway is available to those who have already completed a full year of coursework and practicum work at another CSWE-accredited graduate school of social work in the United States within the last five years.
Students accepted into the Transfer pathway can transfer up to 30 credits from their previous school. At least 30 credits must be completed at Columbia including 21 credits in social work classroom courses and 9 credits in practicum education. Please note that only graduate-level credits can be transferred.
Transfer students can complete their degree within one year. They start at Columbia as a second-year student and will complete one practicum placement. As with all other pathways, they will choose a method specialization and a field of practice.
Coursework Estimates
As a Transfer student, you will take three or four courses per term. You should expect to spend six to eight hours per week in synchronous classes. This is in addition to time spent on homework and other assignments.
You must also spend three days (21 hours total) at your practicum work site each week. Most placements require work during daytime hours, generally 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visit our Practicum Placements page for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions
Transfer credit decisions depend on several factors, including the courses you’ve completed, when you took them, the grades you earned, and how closely your previous program’s curriculum aligns with Columbia’s requirements. Each transfer case is unique.
The best way to understand how your coursework would transfer is to speak directly with an enrollment specialist. They can answer questions about your specific situation and explain exactly what you’d need to complete your degree at Columbia.
Call us at (332) 232-8434 or email onlinemsw@columbia.edu to set up a time to talk.
If you transfer in the full 30 credits, you’ll start in your Specialized Year and can complete your degree in as little as one year.
If you transfer in fewer than 30 credits, you’ll work with the Office of Student Services to create a modified study plan based on the coursework you’ve already completed. Depending on how many credits transfer, you may need more than one year to finish your degree.
You can find out more about your prospective study plan on the Transfer Pathway Curriculum page.
Both pathways allow you to finish your MSSW in one year, but they’re designed for different starting points in your graduate education.
- The Transfer pathway is for students who have taken some coursework but not finished a graduate degree from another CSWE-accredited graduate school of social work.
- The Advanced Standing pathway is for students who have completed a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from an accredited institution.
We highly encourage you to talk with an enrollment specialist at (332) 232-8434 if you have any questions about your specific situation and what pathway fits you.
We do not advise you to work while you are in the MS in Social Work program. Columbia’s program is comprehensive and requires a meaningful time commitment.
In addition to regular, synchronous class sessions and their corresponding homework, you will need to plan for 21 hours of practicum work each week for most pathways, including the Transfer pathway.
