Advanced Standing Online MS in Social Work Overview
The Advanced Standing Online MS in Social Work pathway supports those who have shown a commitment to social work education by completing a bachelor of social work. Applicants who are eligible for this pathway
- have a BSW from a CSWE-accredited social work program and
- have earned that BSW within the last five years.
Students in this pathway complete their MSSW program in one academic year, which includes a summer intensive specially designed for Advanced Standing students.
The courses deepen their direct-practice knowledge while also challenging them to become more self-reflective, anti-oppressive social work professionals. The summer intensive is also an opportunity to meet and establish deep connections with other Columbia MSSW students. Advanced Standing students can take the summer intensive online or in person.
Upon completion of the summer intensive, students enter their Specialized Year. They continue to learn proven methods for supporting populations, while adding more specific skills in line with the method specialization and field of practice of their choosing. They also begin their practicum placement.
Coursework Estimates
As an Advanced Standing student, you will take three or four courses per term. You should expect to spend seven to eight hours per week in synchronous classes, in addition to time spent on homework and other assignments.
During the Fall and Spring terms, you must also spend three days (21 hours total) at your practicum work site each week. Most placements require work during daytime hours, generally 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visit our Practicum Placements page for more information.

The Salary Benefits of a Master’s Degree
According to the labor database Lightcast, social worker roles requiring a master’s degree had a median annual salary of $72,100, while roles requiring only a bachelor’s degree had a median annual salary of $51,000 — a 41% difference.
This aligns with outcomes for Columbia MSSW graduates. In a spring 2025 career survey of MSSW graduates, the annual median salary for Columbia graduates employed full-time in the U.S. was $70,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Advanced Standing recognizes that you’ve already completed foundational social work education through your BSW.
Because you’ve already learned core concepts, you can move directly into your Specialized Year coursework after completing a summer intensive that bridges your undergraduate knowledge and graduate-level practice.
This means you’ll complete your MSSW in one academic year instead of two.
You need a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Your BSW must have been earned within the last five years to be eligible for Advanced Standing.
If you have a bachelor’s degree in another field, you would apply through a different pathway, such as the Two-Year option.
The summer intensive is a five-week program specially designed for Advanced Standing students. It prepares you to enter the CSSW curriculum in the fall as a second-year student. The intensive takes place in mid-July, before your first fall term begins. You can take the intensive online or in person.
During the intensive, you’ll take four courses: an introduction to statistics course, a course on child abuse reporting, a practicum seminar, and an integrative seminar. (Some students may be able to waive the statistics course if they meet certain qualifications.)
Both pathways allow you to finish your MSSW in one year, but they’re designed for different starting points in your graduate education.
- The Advanced Standing pathway is for students who have completed a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from an accredited institution.
- The Transfer pathway is for students who have taken some coursework but not finished a graduate degree from another CSWE-accredited graduate school of social work.
