One-Year Residency Online Pathway Overview

Applicants qualify for the One-Year Residency for Working Professionals (Reduced Residency) Online MS in Social Work pathway if they are currently working in direct practice work in a social services agency and have either

  • two or more years of full-time experience or
  • four or more years of part-time experience

The One-Year Residency for Working Professionals pathway was created to give employees of social service agencies and other nonprofit organizations the opportunity to advance their careers by earning an MSSW over a period of several (usually three) years. Students in this pathway strengthen their abilities by connecting their practical skills to a theoretical framework.

This pathway is split into two segments:

  • Pre-residency phase, where the focus is on foundational courses that expand on the student’s work experience
  • Residency year, where students take more specialized coursework in addition to completing their practicum work requirements

Before they start their residency year, students choose a method specialization and a field of practice. They can select options that align with their current job or choose a new direction to build cross-disciplinary skills.

One-Year Residency for Working Professionals students may choose to complete their practicum placement at their current place of employment, pending approval by their agency and the CSSW Practicum Education Department. Some students, however, choose to leave their agency for a new placement arranged by CSSW. If your agency is approved as your practicum placement site, you will be required to move under a different supervisor and complete different tasks.

Coursework Estimates

As a One-Year Residency for Working Professionals pathway student, you will take two courses per term in your first year. You should expect to spend four to six hours per week in synchronous classes. This is in addition to time spent on homework and other assignments.

During your second year, you can continue taking two courses per term, or start taking your electives for a total of three courses per term.

Once you reach your final year, you are considered a full-time student as you add a practicum placement to your schedule.

Most students in this pathway earn 28 hours per week in practicum. For those approved to complete their practicum placement at their job, 14 hours of their paid work is counted toward practicum and then 14 hours of new assignments must be completed. Visit our Practicum Placements page and our Practicum Education Manual for more information.

Career Outcomes

Professionals like you who are already working in direct practice often come to our Master of Science in Social Work program because they are ready to grow in their responsibilities, scope, or impact.

The One-Year Residency for Working Professionals (Reduced Residency) pathway gives you the academic foundation and professional credential needed to move your career in the direction that makes the most sense for you. It also has a strong track record: among 2024 MSSW graduates with known outcomes, 96% were employed within a year of completing the degree.

Deepen your clinical work

If you want to stay in direct practice, the MSSW positions you to pursue clinical social work licensure. It moves you closer to:

  • Gaining advanced training in approaches you may not yet have been able to study in depth
  • Taking on roles that involve more complex clinical decision-making and assessment
  • Positioning yourself for roles that offer higher levels of responsibility and, in many settings, higher compensation
  • Meeting the graduate education requirements needed to pursue clinical licensure (see more about licensure)

Move into supervisory or program leadership roles

If you are already the person colleagues turn to for guidance, the MSSW can formalize and expand that leadership path. With a focus on both practice and systems, you can prepare to:

  • Supervise staff or interdisciplinary teams
  • Lead or manage programs within your agency or organization
  • Design and evaluate services, not only deliver them
  • Step into agency-level roles that influence practice standards, policies, and outcomes

Shift into policy or systems-focused work

If you aspire to address structural issues, the MSSW gives you academic grounding in policy, research, and systems analysis so you can build toward:

  • Policy analysis and policy-focused roles
  • Advocacy or legislative work at local, state, or national levels
  • Program development and evaluation at a systems level
  • Research roles connected to large-scale social issues and interventions

Translate your skills into adjacent fields

Some experienced practitioners want to stay mission-driven but transition to a different environment or sector. An MSSW is recognized in a range of settings and can be part of a path into roles related to:

  • Higher education and student support services
  • Training, coaching, and workforce development
  • Community partnerships, outreach, and cross-sector collaboration

Salary Outlook

In a spring 2025 career survey of MSSW graduates, the annual median salary for Columbia graduates employed full-time in the U.S. was $70,000. Salaries ranged from $30,000 to $108,000 with an interquartile range of $65,000 to $78,500.
